HQC board member honoured for research on improving quality of care, patient safety

Dr. Ross Baker has been awarded the 2017 Barer-Flood Prize in Health Services and Policy Research. The prize, from the CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR), recognizes “an exceptional researcher who has created a seminal body of work that has had a substantial impact on health services and policy research, policy, and/or care delivery.”

Baker, a member of the Health Qualit Council’s (HQC) board of directors since 2005, is a professor of health policy, management and evaluation and the director of the Master’s degree program in quality improvement and patient safety at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. He is perhaps best known for his lead role in the CIHI/CIHR-funded project Adverse Events in Canadian Hospitals, the first paper of which was published in the May 25, 2004, CMAJ. His 1995 article, A Balanced Scorecard for Canadian Hospitals, served as a template for the now-annual Ontario Hospital Report.

The CIHR-IHSPR award is named after Drs. Morris Barer and Colleen Flood, researchers who played a major role in advancing the field of health services and policy research in Canada.
