First study published by CNODES recognized by top nephrology journal

An article published by the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES) – whose Saskatchewan arm is led by HQC’s Dr. Gary Teare – was the focus of a recent editorial in one of the world’s top nephrology journals.

The commentary, entitled High-Potency Statins and Acute Kidney Injury–Associated Hospitalizations, is published in the latest issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD).

According to Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn,  Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary, and CNODES Alberta Site Lead, the AJKD is one of the top 3 nephrology journals. “The editorial provided by AJKD recommending prudent prescribing of high-potency statins and further evaluation of statin potency demonstrates the clinical importance of this work,” says Dr. Hemmelgarn.

The original article (Use of high potency statins and rates of admission for acute kidney injury: multicenter, retrospective observational analysis of administrative databases), which was published in the prestigious British Medical Journal, found that high-potency statins, which are used to control cholesterol, appear to pose a small risk of kidney damage.
