The Alberta Health Services (AHS) Indigenous Patient Journey projects sought to explore what was working, what was not working and what was missing in Addiction and Mental Health (AMH) services delivered to Indigenous populations. To get an accurate picture of service-user experience the project collected quantitative and qualitative data from the service users themselves, capturing the voice of lived experience.
After over 100 interviews with predominantly homeless high needs service users with multiple episodes of care in addiction and mental health facilities, and 100 predominantly homeless high needs service users who were incarcerated, the project team identified extremely complex service needs including:
