New physician track of Lean Leader Training available

Saskatchewan physicians interested in learning how to apply Lean in their practices can now pursue a shorter route to certification.

In response to feedback from doctors, the province has developed a physician track of Lean Leader Training that requires about 24 days to complete, compared to almost 80 days for the regular track.

The new program can be done in 12-18 months, with physicians required to participate in one five-day Rapid Process Improvement Workshop (RPIW) each year. In the regular track, participants must also serve as team lead and sub-team leads, both of which require a significant time commitment.

In announcing the new program, Acting Deputy Minister Max Hendricks said a key part of Saskatchewan’s commitment to adopting a Lean Management System is building skills and knowledge around this philosophy and methodology among providers, administrators, and staff. “Strong physician leadership is foundational to the success of our health system transformation,”said Hendricks. “Physicians are critical in understanding patient care needs and identifying opportunities for improvement.”

Physicians who have already started in the original program have the option of switching to the new track. However, physicians with formal leadership positions in RHAs are strongly encouraged to do full Lean Leader Certification – this is mandatory for further training and development as a Kaizen Fellow.
