Statin study co-authored by HQC published in prestigious British Medical Journal

The first research to be published by the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES) – whose Saskatchewan arm is led by HQC’s Dr. Gary Teare – hit print today in the British Medical Journal. The study found that high-potency statins, used to control cholesterol, appear to pose a small risk of kidney damage.

“This new knowledge will help doctors recommend safer treatment options to regulate cholesterol levels in patients who may not need a high-potency statin,” said Dr. Teare, who is an adjunct professor with the University of Saskatchewan School of Public Health.

The paper was posted online today by the British Medical Journal; it will appear in the print edition of BMJ to be published Saturday. CNODES is part of the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network (DSEN), which is funded by Health Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
